“Fife and Drum Inn continues to be our home away from home when we visit Williamsburg, without us having to cook or clean.”
~ Janice and Riley
The Cedars suite is our largest accommodation at our Williamsburg VA Bed and Breakfast. It is a two room suite with a sitting room, separated from the bedroom by glass French doors.
The beautiful King size bed will envelope you in comfort! For those who wish to escape the 20th century all together, the TV/DVD is hidden in a corner cabinet.
The sitting room opens directly to the back porch. There are hardwood floors throughout the suite. The all tiled bathroom features a seated shower with European shower massage, a pedestal sink and closeted toilet. Wonderful shower amenities and a hair dryer are provided. Guests can adjust the temperature of their room with the wall mounted thermostat.
One thing the originators of the restoration came to realize was not going to sync with their plans was the lack of lodging facilities for visitors. Within a very short time of opening of the first exhibition buildings, the administration requested that citizens open their homes for public lodging. Mrs. Mary Hitchens, grandmother of the owner, operated one such guest home, “The Cedars” on the old York Road just east of the newly reconstructed Colonial Capital building. The home was built as part of the restoration effort. Mr. Hitchens had sold his home and general store properties on Duke of Gloucester Street to the Restoration and built a beautiful six bedroom home on the east side of town. Mrs. Hitchens hosted guests there for twenty years beginning in 1948.
