Taking a Leisurely Ride Through History
Williamsburg, VA, has so much to offer vacationers and locals alike: a bustling downtown full of shops and restaurants, Colonial Williamsburg, where history comes to life, and nearby William & Mary College. It may have been built long before bikes appeared, but it’s still perfect for two-wheeled exploration.
For fans of outdoor activities, there are dozens of bike trails of all lengths. They are perfect for a casual ride around town and through breathtaking views of Virginia.
Explore Greater Williamsburg by Bike
Ride along the bike-friendly paths and trails through the beautifully landscaped College of Williams & Mary campus, where historic architecture and collegiate charm draw visitors from all over. After riding through the campus, take a tour through Williamsburg’s Merchant Square, an 18th-century-style retail village with over 40 shops and restaurants. Finish off the bike ride by traveling back in time by pedaling through Colonial Williamsburg.
Don’t forget about the motherload of Virginia bike trails: the Virginia Capital Trail. This 51.7-mile paved bike and pedestrian trail crosses four counties between Jamestown and Richmond. As you ride along, stop and see the various parks, museums, and historical sites that dot the route.
More Bike Trails are a Short Drive from Fife and Drum
Once the bikes are loaded up and ready to go, consider the Colonial National Historic Parkway. This twenty-three-mile scenic roadway is easily accessible from our Williamsburg bed and breakfast and connects Virginia’s historic triangle: Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.
If you're looking for a shorter ride, the Jamestown Island Loop Drive is perfect. Surrounded by a unique natural environment that greeted early English settlers, this three-to-five-mile island loop includes stops to view the ruins of Ambler Mansion and much of the early settlement of Historic Jamestowne's New Towne.
