Holiday Season in Colonial Williamsburg: Grand Illumination

The Grand Illumination traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Colonial Williamsburg, when all the windows in the historic area buildings are illuminated by candles. Originally held on the first Sunday in December, the festival has since expanded to include every weekend throughout December leading up to Christmas Day.

As you stroll through the historic area, they can admire the festive wreaths and door decorations on the homes, crafted entirely from fruits, live greenery, and other items that would have been available in colonial times. December has become one of the most popular months to visit, thanks to the enchanting atmosphere.

Each weekend features spectacular fireworks displays every Saturday night from prime viewing locations at the Colonial Capitol and the Governor’s Palace, creating a truly memorable experience for all.

When the festivities are over, or you just need a break, it is just a short distance to the Fife and Drum Inn, where you can relax and recharge.
