A romantic weekend getaway in Williamsburg, VA: Date ideas & dinner recommendations

What is there to do in Williamsburg, VA for couples?

It’s a great question, and we are here to help guide you in planning the perfect special experience, unique to YOU and your special someone.

So without further ado, here are some date ideas for couples in Williamsburg, and our dinner recommendations as well!

1. For the Book Lovers

Date Idea: Coffee & Book Browsing

After grabbing a coffee from Aromas, Williamsburg’s most beloved coffee house seated just next door to the F&D, mosey just a few steps further and down an enchanting little staircase to the new bookstore, the Fallen Acorn Bookshop to pick up a book. Find a picturesque spot in Colonial Williamsburg, just a block further, to read your new books together!

Dinner Recommendation: Culture Cafe

With a whimsical wonderland atmosphere, book quotes across the walls, and each check delivered in the pages of a vintage book, the delicious food and drink of this establishment will absolutely charm you book lovers!

2. For the History Lovers

Date Idea: Carriage Ride and Private Tour of CW

A two parter, you MUST begin this date with something totally unique to Colonial Williamsburg and, let’s be honest, just downright fun. The carriage rides are truly special, with the personable drivers engaging you and giving little tidbits the whole way. Then, arrange a private tour after your ride with Williamsburg Walking Tours. The breadth of their history knowledge is such that they can really tailor the tour to your interests. Perfect for a unique date for two history lovers.

Dinner Recommendation: The King's Arms Tavern

A must-try, if you want to step back in time, be served by a colonial staff in the flickering candlelight of a colonial backdrop. Complete with a menu of traditional colonial fair, this is for you history lovers who really want to transport yourselves for one enchanted evening!

3. For the Active Adventurers

Date Idea: Bike the Capitol Trail & Ferry

Rent bicycles from Spoke & Art, a haven for nature loving locals and visitors alike, out near Jamestown and the James River to tune up bikes and grab refreshment on their travels! Bike the Capitol Trail, a fully paved trail going all the way to Richmond, VA, as far as you please, or hop on board the ferry (it’s free!) and take the gorgeous ride over to Surry, VA. This part of Virginia feels rural and wild, perfect for a romantic adventure.

Dinner Recommendation: Blue Talon Bistro

Feeling like you just biked the Tour de France? Let’s keep that vibe for you and head over to the Blue Talon, right across from the Fife and Drum Inn. With incredible French-inspired dishes, it’s sure to satisfy. (We recommend the Steak Frites and chocolate mousse for dessert).

4. For the Nature Goers

Date Idea: Kayak the Marshes & Brewery with a View

Just a few miles from the Fife and Drum Inn, a truly breathtaking ecosystem exists around the James River. Go explore the brackish marshy channels, starting by renting kayaks or SUPs at the James City County Marina. You will see the blue heron, the osprey, the bald eagle, and surely many more creatures that make our Virginia landscape so very special - bring a camera!

Dinner Recommendation: Billsburg Brewery

Billsburg Brewery sits atop the James City County Marina. Come back from your paddle with a refreshed connection to nature and each other, and a hungry stomach — the Hungry Pug food truck serves great hearty food, and live music is usually playing on the outdoor stage in a cozy, convivial atmosphere!

5. For the Luxury Lovers

Date idea: Spa Day

The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg cannot be beat for its luxury services. Book a day for you and your sweetheart, take advantage of the pool, hot tubs, cold plunge, along with your massage and other relaxing activities.

Dinner Recommendation: The Fat Canary

The Canary has long had a reputation in Williamsburg for being one of the best restaurants in town - so much that it requires a reservation far in advance. When you book with us at the F&D, let us know you’d like a table, and we’ll see what we can do to get you in!

6. For the Wine Lovers

Date Idea: Tour and Tasting at the Williamsburg Winery

The Winery has long been a staple of our community, and for good reason. This is the perfect date, in our opinion, for the wine lovers. Inspect the grape upon the vine, follow its process into fermentation and all the way into the barrel, and then celebrate the transformation in a tasting!

Dinner Idea: Cochon on 2nd

Although you Wine Lovers would adore the Fat Canary as well, Cochon on 2nd is another phenomenal local establishment, one which frequently presents themed “Wine Down Dinners”. Keep an eye on their website for the next one!
