The summer is coming to a close, but that doesn't change our love for this sweet treat. We're talking about ice cream!
Every month is “Ice Cream Month” in Williamsburg, and it is celebrated all over the city. Prince George Street may be the capital of ice cream delights in Virginia (or Ice Cream Heaven). You can stay at the Fife and Drum Inn, which is directly at the heart of all the offerings. This historic boutique Inn is the only lodging in the downtown Merchants Square area. Let's explore all the different offerings this sweet area offers!
Frozen Custard is the ice cream world’s creamiest, most decadent offering. At Retro’s Good Eats, you can get freshly frozen custard made from cream specially shipped from very happy cows in Pennsylvania. The freezing point for frozen custard is higher than regular ice creams, eliminating ice crystals. Elimination of conventional corn syrups leaves a cleaner taste and full, rich flavor. Soft served in a cup or cone, the base flavors are chocolate and vanilla. They offer various sundae toppings and combine 35 flavors of thick, memorable shakes.
Across the street and next to the Peanut Shop, Baskin Robins, the longtime mainstay of ice cream downtown, offers their thirty-one fabulous flavors, introducing new creations as seasons change. Since 1945, they have created over 1300 unique and delicious flavors. They are famous for their frozen cakes, layered with cake and ice cream in various combinations and available in numerous themes for all occasions. Their flavor menu includes gluten-free, non-dairy, and vegan options. They have seats inside and out, offering a unique people-watching perch around a beautiful shade tree. There is adjacent parking, an added perk!
Next to Perfectly Natural Soap, directly across the street, you will find Kilwin’s. Made in small batches with fresh milk and creams from family farms, Kilwin’s ice cream is Kosher certified and offers rotating selections from their menu of over forty original flavors. This “super-premium” ice cream is a rich, high-quality treat. Smell those waffle cones baking, and you can’t pass this up! Additional options include frozen Greek yogurt, sorbets, and no-sugar-added ice creams.
Across Boundary Street from the Sweet Tea Boutique, walk west to The Barkery and experience the extraordinary Nightingale Ice Cream sandwiches. Made in Richmond by a Belgian chef, these frozen confections incorporate homemade cookies using only the freshest ingredients to create gourmet, handcrafted ice cream treats. These are so incredible that once you experience this novelty ice cream concoction, you will be going back to try all four combinations. It’s impossible to choose a favorite!
Did we forget the caffeine? Aroma's Coffee Shop is next to the Campus Shop, which has the one and only “Dog Street Chill.” This year-round favorite has two shots of espresso, vanilla ice cream, and your choice of flavored syrups to give you that “Kick” of Cold Delicious any time of day!
We all scream for these delicious sweet treats, and with a different dessert on every corner, you'll need a few days to try them all! The good news is that we are positioned on Prince George Street, right in the heart of town, so you're only a short trip (even a 3-minute walk!) from a tantalizing end to your day.
